Video Conversion

I know I can't be the only person with this problem, but right now my only reliable video device is a Panasonic digital camcorder.  It's good enough for most things I want to put on video, but getting the video onto my computer in any sort of readable way is ridiculous.  Panasonic's website doesn't even have a converter for their specific file type that, apparently, no program I own can read.  I'm not sure what the point of a digital camcorder that can record onto an SD card is if it can't let me put it onto a computer.  Anyway, my question is this: Does anyone know of a program, that is free, and does not leave a watermark, that can convert the Panasonic file type into a type that can be used by standard Windows Movie Editor (not sure of the exact name), so I can actually put it to use?  @CristinaViseu?
