Hey all! I'm incredibly excited to start up some discussions about geek stuff and booze! One of the greatest things about the internet is how it has opened up the possibility of meeting people that I would have never met. In the past few years I have forged friendships with dozens of people and learned so much about the world. And I can't wait to meet more people here! Allow me to introduce myself.

My name is Mitch Hutts and I'm one of the newest Geek & Sundry vloggers. My vlog, Critical Hit Cocktails, will revolve around the creation of cocktails inspired by geeky references. Whether it's attempting to recreate Ryncol, the highly potent drink from the Mass Effect series, or turning Captain Hammer into a mixed drink, I love the creative factor that goes into mixing two passions. I started mixing geeky drinks back when I turned 21 and wanted to learn more about alcohol. I decided to chronicle my journey by making a blog on Tumblr called The Drunken Moogle. The first drinks were pretty awful, but I have no regrets! I learned a lot and I had tons of fun doing it with friends. I continued to learn over the years by watching videos, reading books, and trying out different combinations of flavors. I've never had any formal training like bar school, though it's something that I would like to do in the future. There's a wealth of information to be learned on the internet and I hope to share some of my knowledge with you.

Mixology can be a difficult thing to get into. Alcohol is expensive and no matter how hard you try, you'll never be able to create a drink that absolutely EVERYONE will like the taste of. Some of my goals with this series is to help inspire you to start making your own creations and to create a variety of drinks that people can enjoy with their eyes, mouths, and brains. I hope you all will enjoy this adventure with me!

SO, since this is the first post, let's get things started with a first question:

What was your first drink? If you haven't yet had an alcoholic beverage, what is your current favorite non-alcoholic drink?

  • My first alcoholic drink was an Ice House beer. Though it's far from my favorite, I still enjoy cheap beer every once in a while. It reminds me a lot of hanging out with friends and being at my friend's lake house.

  • My first alcoholic beverage was White Zinfandel from the time I was old enough to hold a wine glass (my family is from Europe, they didn't believe in that 21 and up rule).
  • My first drink was a Sapporo on my 21st birthday.  I kept the bottle for a long time but had to use it one day to get gasoline when my car broke down and I didn't have a gas can.  Sapporo saved my life!  Haha.

My first "drink" was Irish Mist which I had liberated from my dad's liquor cabinet when I was not yet of age. Terrible tasting stuff, but when your that young it's whatever you can get your hands on. I also remember sneaking brandy out in a shampoo bottle, only there was still a little shampoo in it so it was disgusting.

Currently my drink of choice is cider with a shot Fireball whiskey in it. Potent.

  • Cheap lager, cider and vodka was the introduction to alcohol in my small village growing up. I remember coming home one night in my teens slightly drunk and my parents said "Where have you been?", "I've been for a pizza", I replied before turning round and walking into the door. "You've had more than a pizza!" my dad said ominously... :D

If you can create a drink that turns me into commander Shepard and puts Miranda on my arm I'll buy it :D Then again ten pints of lager could probably do that as well :D

  • My first drink was probably a fruity cider, though to be totally honest, I can't really remember. Can't wait to see & taste some of the different combinations you come up with!
  • My first drink was a terrible cooler called Vex. Followed shortly by a Bicardi cooler. To this day, coolers make me cringe.

  • My first drink was probably Hutterite Wine (basicly moonshine) at a rather young age. Now I tend to drink for taste with gin & tonic my go to drink.
  • Well I've been drinking small amounts of sacramental wine since I was born, but I don't think that counts. As an adult, I probably started on sweet sparkling red wines (Lambrusco), but have at least matured my tastes since then to nice dry reds and whites, plus dryer ciders as well (although the occasional sweet cider is still pretty awesome). No problems with  most cocktails either, although I do tend to avoid the vodka heavy ones due to some fairly bad hangovers in my 20s :D

Never managed to get a taste for beer though. It's not as though I find the stuff revolting, I just don't like the taste. Makes me an oddity as an Aussie bloke, mind you.

  • First drink, probably some Bacardi Breezer that was forced upon me. It was the tipple of choice for the underage.

My current jams? Malibu and Irn Bru, Sailor Jerry and Coke, Absolute and Ice.

My first drink, i think it was a wine, or maybe cider, today i'm not so much in alcoholics drinks but a good crafted beer or from a nice brand is always welcome, as the clasic "fernandito" (fernet and coke) or may be an screwdriver, but that is rare.
EDIT, i just found the Sonic Screwdriver! thats a geek drink!!! to get the ingredients

My first drink was either a sip of Mom's daiquiri or her whiskey sour.

I have a collection of personal favorites but have always wanted the recipe for a perfect Rob Roy.

I'm a big fan of beers, ales and stouts. I want to attempt to brew my own. I have made wine, mead, ciders and my favorite of my own beverages is traditional Applejack.

Of course, good scotch is always my go to.

  • @Fiendish_Imp I've had cider with bourbon in it, but I've never tried Fireball! Sounds like the cinnamon would be a good addition. Thanks for the tip.

@SarahTheRebel I often feel an upbringing like that would be beneficial. Learn young about drinking responsibly and then by the time you're 21, you can wow all your friends with your impressive wine pairing knowledge! *raises pinky*

  • My first drank was a bottle of vodka. I was young and didn't understand how drinking worked. It was a fun night . - . .... I think.
  • A Bud Light Lime that I bought from Walmart the day of my 21st.

I'm told my first alcoholic drink ever was a half glass of White
Zinfandel when I was three, the folks I was with weren't paying
attention and I was quick. Now the first drink I know of was Bacardi
Rum, neat. Loved it since, but I've moved on to spiced rum.
  • @LQKaz That's like my son's first taste of alcohol was a rusty nail before the age of 2. He got his hand submerged in his father's glass before we noticed and got a sip and licked his hand clean. Like father, like son, he didn't seem to mind the taste at all. Since he clearly has a taste for it, we're trying to educate him in drink manners at an early age. He knows how to clink glasses before taking a drink for toasting (his is usually just milk though), and he gives many appreciative 'ahhs' after having a sip.
  • @Jennerosity My baby niece clinks glasses with us at dinner! She saw us doing it with wine and lifted up her sippy cut to touch ours. It's pretty adorable.

  • I decided i'm going to come up with a drink for the Cardassian Kanar and video response it for you haha (my youtube is rucksackwanderer0 i commented about this in the last video). i'm going to come up wih two drinks, the unaged (orange kanar that you see normal cardassians drinking) and aged (the dark, black kanar you see the Guls drinking). I'm thinking of making them rum based, just so i can make the aged Kanar based on THE KRAKEN!
